Obituary of Carl Zane Goostree

Carl Zane Goostree “Goose”, age 83 of Salem, passed away at his home Monday evening, August 3, 2020. Zane was born on September 27, 1936 in Iuka, IL, the son of Carl Leslie and Allie (Henson) Goostree. He married Dorothy I. (Duncan) Goostree on December 24, 1954 in Salem, IL and she survives. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy of Salem; daughter, Tammy Lewis and husband Rob of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Jeromy Goostree and wife Stacey, Jennifer Mengarelli and husband Shawn, Jon Harwell and wife Ping, Paige Murphy and husband Adam, and Ben Lewis; 12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Carl Zane Goostree Jr. and Robert Eugene “Bobby” Goostree; and a brother, Dale Goostree. Raised in Iuka, he graduated from Salem Community High School and was an active FFA member. He was employed and retired from Egyptian Concrete as a driver and general dispatcher for over 35 years, and played a vital role in the construction of many local bridges and infrastructure improvements – literally paving the way for a better world for others. Zane was an avid fisherman, as well as a bowler and hunter in his younger years. He was known for his talkative, welcoming nature and countless stories along with a few practical jokes. Family and friends remember him as truly compassionate, humble, and caring - interested in learning about the lives of all he encountered. Despite a battle with cancer, heart complications later in life, and surviving West Nile Virus at the age of 82, he never faltered in his efforts to help others and make them feel loved and supported. In his later years he took great pride in his lawn keeping and was frequently seen on his lawn mower manicuring his yard and the yards of his neighbors. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Graveside services for Carl Zane Goostree will be held at 2:00 pm of Friday August 7, 2020 at Palestine Cemetery in Iuka, with Claude Howell officiating.
