Obituary of Robert D Raver
Robert D. Raver, age 91 of Salem passed away on Monday January 6, 2020 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Robert was born on October 8, 1928 in Salem, Illinois to Willis Leroy and Bertha (Tate) Raver. He married Jackie S. (Featherling) Raver on December 25, 1950 and she preceded him in death in 1990. He later married Mary Ellen (Leverenz) Hyde Raver on September 20, 1990 and she preceded him in death on September 17, 2019.
Survivors include a son, James Robert Raver and wife Nita of Salem; daughters, Susan Bacon and husband Dennis of Benton, Jenny Carlson and husband Ed of Salem, and Laura Westegaard and husband Dennis of La Grange, IL; step son, Larry Hyde and wife Sue Ann of St. Charles, IL; step daughter, Susan Hellige and husband Dennis of Collinsville; and two sisters-in-law, LaDon Bookhout Adams and Joyce Raver He was also survived by 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by two brother, Dwight and James Raver.
Robert began his educational career as a Salem Elementary School Teacher and Principal at Oak Park Grade School. His early career was interrupted by his National Guard service when he was sent to Korea during the Korean Conflict. He then worked for the Illinois Office of Education as the Supervisor of Title 1 for 26 Southern Illinois Counties. Later Bob became the Superintendent of Salem High School and served from 1967-1991. In 1959 he helped reopen the Antioch Christian Church in Texico and was the minister there for 14 years. He has served as a faithful adult Sunday school teacher for many years at both the Antioch Christian Church and First Christian Church. He was a member of Rotary, the Salem Historical Commission, a past member of the Salem Community High School Academic Foundation, he was inducted into the SCHS Academic Hall of Fame, and was the first graduate of SCHS to earn a PhD.
Services for Robert Raver will be held on Saturday January 11, 2020 at 6:00pm at the Crouse Funeral Home with Jonathan Schnautz and Phil Martin officiating. There will be a visitation at the funeral home from 3:00pm until the time of the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salem High School Academic Foundation or the Antioch Christian Church Mission Fund and can be left at the funeral home.
