Mabel Viscarra, age 88 of Salem, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024 at her home with her children at her side. Mable was born on January 20, 1936 in Elizabethtown, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Austin Hurford and Martha Lavina (Keeling) Hurford. She married Alfred Viscarra Sr. in April of 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. Survivors include her children, Alfred Viscarra Jr. of Salem, and Barbara Holm and husband Thomas of St. Charles, Illinois; siblings, Lawanda Volkert of Smyrna, Tennessee, Dorothy Haynes of Evergreen Colorado, Linda Meyers of Harrisburg, Illinois, and Harve Hurford of Elizabethtown, Illinois; two grandchildren, Andrew Holm and wife Ali Kaminski of Cudahy, Wisconsin, and Mandy Garza and husband Michael of East Dundee, Illinois. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Martha Hurford; her husband, Alfred Viscarra Sr.; and siblings, Benjamin Hurford, Geneva McDowell, Juanita Lamar, Herbert Hurford, Dolly Hurford, and two infants; along with her special dogs, Abby and Maggie, and her cat, Goofey. Mable worked for many years doing data entry for an insurance company in Chicago, Illinois. Mable loved to read books, and had a special place in her heart for animals. Visitation for Mable Viscarra will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will take place Friday morning June 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Empire Cemetery in Elizabethtown, Illinois. Memorial contributions can be made to the donor’s local animal shelter of their choice in Mable’s name and will be received at the funeral home.
