Obituary of Dr. Armando Primitivo Aguilar
Dr. Armando Primitivo Aguilar, 95, of Salem, IL passed away peacefully and entered into eternal rest on March 27th in St. Louis, MO. surrounded by his children.
He is survived by his three children Alex (Lisa), Victor (Rachel) and Christina (Ben DeVerger), his grandchildren Alexa (Jay Schwab), Olivia, Devon, Alexander, and Lorenzo; his great-grandchildren; Sarah, Gabriel and Audrey and a close circle of family and friends. He is preceded in death by his dear wife, Isabel Edilia Aguilar, beloved son, Armando “Babe” Aguilar, and his grandson, Angelo.
Armando was born in Nueva Paz, Cuba on November 27, 1928 to Ezequiel and Serafina Aguilar. Armando graduated from the University of Havana Medical School in 1953. He met his future wife, Isabel Ramos, and the couple married on November 5, 1960. They started their married life in a “twin” house next door to his in-laws with Armando’s new medical practice nearby.
The Cuban Revolution was brewing as their eldest child, Alejandro “Alex” was born, and many in their families fled the brutal restrictions. Armando and Isabel waited for clearance to make their exit to Spain in 1963 with just a few changes of clothes in their suitcase and a few dollars. They eventually reunited with family in the U.S., became United States citizens and began the arduous task of rebuilding their lives in Chicago, Kankakee, and finally Salem, IL, where they created a fulfilling life. Alejandro was joined by Armando “Babe,” Victor and Christina.
Dr. Aguilar practiced medicine and served Salem and the surrounding communities for over 40 years before retiring in 2009 at the age of 80. Dr. Aguilar along with his long-time partner, Dr. Rubio, established the Salem Medical Center in 1972 providing valuable medical services and care for their patients. He, along with other physicians and civic leaders, later developed Doctor’s Nursing Home. He was a member of numerous medical associations and organizations throughout his life and career.
He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Salem as well as the Rotary Club. He will not only be remembered as a wonderful physician and healer, but also as a kind, caring gentleman. He loved nature and working in his yard taking care of his beautiful plants and flowers. He was dedicated to and adored his family, including his dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on April 1st, 2024 at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem, IL. Visitation hours are from 12 pm-1:30 pm. The funeral will begin at 2 pm followed by his burial.
