Obituary of Harley Douglas Carter

Harley Douglas Carter, age 19, of Salem, passed away at his home on January 27, 2024. He was born to Douglas W. Carter and Shelly Miller in Breese, IL on February 9, 2004. He is survived by his mother, Shelly Miller and friend Jarrod of Ohio; two sisters: Shania Kincaid and fiancé David Myers of Effingham and Carley McComas and husband Tim of Ohio; grandparents, Carl Miller and wife Sybil of KY; aunts and uncles: LeeAnn Spangler and husband Bob of KY, Carl E. Miller and friend Linda of OH, Barbara Spillman and husband Greg of OH, Mike Miller and wife Shannon of KY, Verland Carter of Alma, Charles R. “Bobby” Carter of Patoka, David Carter and wife Debbie of IN, Alfred Carter and girlfriend Rhonda Julius of Kinmundy, Sue Sanders and husband Arthur of Odin, and Janet Sullens and husband Roger of Salem; adoptive grandparents, Bruce and Brenda Sowers of Mason; niece, Scarlett Willenborg; nephews, Walker and Colt McComas; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Doug Carter; maternal grandmother, JoAnn Miller; paternal grandparents, Robert and Neoma Carter; and an uncle, Delbert Carter. Harley worked as a dispatcher for the Marion County Sheriff's Department and was a dedicated volunteer for the Salem Fire Protection District. He enjoyed being able to serve his community and his county in his career. He enjoyed playing the guitar, driving his truck, and being with his friends and family. He was a young man loved by so many, whose heart was always looking to serve others. A Celebration of Life for Harley Douglas Carter will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Grace Church of the Nazarene in Salem with Pastor Trent Ice officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service. The Salem Fire Protection District and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department will be providing an Honor Guard during the visitation. A flag presentation and Honors will be conducted by the Marion County Fire Service Honor Guard. For those who wish, memorials can be made to the Salem Fire Protection District or to a fund for his niece and nephews, and can be left at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem.
