Obituary of Robert Erxleben Jr.

Robert Erxleben Jr., aged 82, of Salem, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 8, 1941, in Texas to Robert Sr. and Rosemary (Stowell) Erxleben. Robert grew up in St. Louis. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. On December 30, 2005, Robert married Gayle (Holden) Erxleben, and they joyously renewed their vows on September 2, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife, Gayle of Salem; daughters Allison Erxleben Porcelli and husband Dean and Michelle Erxleben Luse and husband Jay; stepson Jason Burnett and wife Jeana; stepdaughter Andrea Stinde and special friend Wayne; grandchildren Matthew Erxleben, Claire Porcelli, Andrew Porcelli, Alyssa Luse, Hayden Stinde, and Justin DuBois; and sister Sharon Catanzaro. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rich, and a step son, David Burnett. Robert was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Rolla with a degree in Civil Engineering, he was a dedicated professional civil engineer. He owned ECI Engineering Firm in Salem and served as the City Engineer for the City of Salem. He also established and previously owned Health and Fitness in Salem. Robert was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Salem. Beyond his professional pursuits, Robert was an accomplished athlete with a passion for football, track, diving, karate (earning a black belt), and racquetball. He proudly won the Senior Olympics in St. Louis in racquetball and held the title of National Champion in Paintball. A multifaceted individual, he also showcased his artistic side as an award-winning photographer and was still serving as the President of the Light & Lens Photography Club in Centralia. A true romantic, Robert reveled in the art of professional competitive ballroom dancing with his beloved wife, Gayle. Known for his unwavering commitment and zest for life, he poured his heart and soul into everything he pursued. Whether traveling, playing games, or simply enjoying quality time with his family, Robert's enthusiasm knew no bounds. A Celebration of Life Service for Robert Erxleben will take place on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Salem, officiated by his grandson, Matthew Erxleben. Friends and family are invited to share memories and visit with the family from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Salem.
