Obituary of Max Howell
Max Howell, aged 93 of Odin, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Centralia Manor in Centralia. He was born on September 23, 1930, in Iuka, Illinois, the son of Martin and Effie (Snow) Howell. On October 10, 1948, he married Geneva McDaneld in Morganfield, Kentucky, and she preceded him in death.
Max is survived by his children: Marilyn Gimbel and husband Tom of Odin, Barb Hollis and husband Charles of Chillicothe, Illinois, Norman Howell and wife Karen of Union, Missouri, and daughter-in-law Terry Howell of Odin. He is also survived by his brother, Claude Howell Sr. of Salem, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Geneva, his daughter Sharon Jarnagin, his son Dennis Howell, two brothers, Raymond and Irvin Howell, and three sisters, Bessie Gaston, Nora Hays, and Darlene Goostree.
Max served two tours honorably in the United States Army as a tank operator during the Korean Conflict, where he was based in France and Germany. He loved his country and was very patriotic.
He worked in maintenance at the Hollywood Candy Company and at the wire and steel mill in Sterling.
He held a strong Christian faith throughout his life.
Funeral services for Max Howell will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem, with Claude Howell officiating. Burial will follow at Deadmond Cemetery in Odin with military rites by the Salem American Legion. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
