I have struggled to find the right words to express my feelings for the loss of Dave Quinn. You see, other than family and a hand full of friends, I’ve known Dave longer than most. His brother Bob and I met in 1970 and he immediately became my best friend…and if you knew Bob, you knew Dave. We spent a lot of time together in the ensuing years. The years that shape you and make you what you become in life. The years in which I saw Dave go from not having a care in the world to caring about everyone and everything in the world. Dave may have worn a lot of hats in his life, but I knew him best as a quick wit, master of fast talk and throw away lines. But he was also someone who could defuse any situation and find humor even in the darkest hour. A man who genuinely cared for his fellow man. The world needs more people like Dave Quinn, though no one can ever replace him. I was one of the fortunate ones to have seen Dave recently. We shared time appropriately enough in the stands at Busch Stadium while a Cardinals baseball game was being played on the field. The game and results were inconsequential. What I remember most was the conversation. It touched on the past and how he was grateful that I had shared some memorable moments with him. He was also excited about the present and showed me pictures of Maddi and Harper and his new grandson Landon. At the time I didn’t realize that would be the last face to face conversation I would have with Dave. But in reminiscing about that night, I have tried to dissect and cherish every subject and every word. While I cannot bring myself to speak of Dave in the past tense, I realize I won’t be talking to him again and I am grateful for all the times we had together. I was fortunate to have Dave Quinn in my life and will miss not having him in the rest of it. What he was to me went “beyond friendship”.

Dave and I had a ton of fun while classmates at McClure Senior High. Many fond memories come to mind of the symphonic and marching bands. Milk carton hockey in the halls of M-5 was a blast and great preparation for infamous Saturday afternoon Ferguson vs. Florissant street hockey games. We didn’t learn much German, probably because in the class lab we were too busy making funny tapes to share instead of practicing our Deutsch.
In my 1974 yearbook, Dave quoted George Carlin – “It’s not how long you make it, it’s how you make it long.” Dave left us too soon, but he certainly made the most of his life. I pray that Bob, the Quinn family, and everyone who loved Dave remembers his bright, fun-filled life.

A favorite memory of David I have was when I waited with my Granny(or Aunt Mary to a lot of you) to see him when he was in the Twilight Zone. I was 5 or 6 and thought oh my gosh my cousin is in a real life movie!! He is famous!! I remember telling all my friends at school the next day that I had a famous Cousin!! Trying to score all the cool points I could from this lol!! When we would be at Grandma Quinns for holidays I would always look at David as this famous man in awe. Thinking what the heck is he doing here with us common people he is famous!! As an adult I have gotten to see David for the person he was. He was such a kind person. With an enormous smile. Always with such a positive attitude. The world is a little darker without him in it for sure.To Bev, Madi, his siblings, aunt Betty and the whole family I send my deepest condolences and love to all. RIP David you will be missed.

Mr. Quinn was my Public Speaking instructor at KC, exactly 10 years ago. He was an amazingly patient instructor who always tried to make his students feel as comfortable as possible while in his classroom. My daughter and I also attended many of the wonderful shows he directed at Kaskaskia College. Our community lost a good one when Mr. Quinn left his earthly body. My sincere condolences to his family.

As a student on The Scroll, I interviewed David as a new faculty member at KC. It was a fun memorable interview. He was my speech teacher, then later my colleague at KC, and always a good friend! His eyes lit up a room. He made everyone feel special. Peace, David.

David Quinn had such an incredible soul. He directed me in The Pajama Game in 2003 at Kaskaskia College. The cast also included my incredibly-talented cousin Tara Waters. I had the time of my life with that cast and with David at the helm. He brought out the best in me and in all of us, not only for this cast but for everyone he ever came in contact with. One time in 2012, he asked me advice about John Robert Powers as his daughter Madi had an audition and I steered him away from their greedy scams. We had a lot of nice talks over the years. He was one of the kindest, most passionate, and dynamic people I've ever worked with or have been around. Farewell David and may you direct a choir of angels for your next musical.
