Obituary of Stanton "Stan" W. Hughes

Stanton Wayne “Stan” Hughes, age 84 of Salem, passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at his home after a battle with cancer. Stan was born on May 20, 1938 in Comanche, Texas, the son of Waymond P. and Grace (Boatman) Hughes. He married Nellie (Hiestand) Mulvany Hughes and she survives in Salem. Survivors include his wife Nellie of Salem; daughters, Audra Hahn of Kinmundy, Lori Curtis and husband Alan of Cypress, Texas, and Sarah Wallace and husband Brian of Cypress, Texas; special daughter, Olga Posada of Florida; grandchildren, Sawyer (Niki), Abby (Dominique Parks), Lauren, Aubrey, Emily, Meredith, and Ashley; great granddaughter, Penelope; a sister, Joyce Gilliam and nephew, Shelly Gilliam of Bowling Green, Kentucky; and In laws, Larry and Frances Smith of Salem and Connie Patton of Alma. He was also survived by many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers in-law, Ralph Gilliam and Gary Garrett; and sisters in-law, Cindy Beard and Suzanne Garrett. Stan graduated from Comanche High School in Texas in 1956. He then received his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Kentucky University, and later his Masters from the University of Illinois and Specialists Degree from the Southern Illinois University. He worked as a Counselor and in Administration at Salem Community High School where he retired after 35 years. After retirement from education, Stan worked at various banks in the area. Stan was a member of the Salem Shriners Club and was a 50-year member of the Masons where he was a past master of the Marion Lodge 130 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Salem Rotary Club, the Eastern Star, as well as several educational organizations. Stan was the pianist for many years for the Evangelaires Quartet. Celebration of Life services for Stan Hughes will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 3:00p.m. at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem with Pastor Christine Cunningham officiating. There will be a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
