Obituary of Lela Helpingstine

Lela Helpingstine, age 98 of Centralia, formerly of Salem and Odin, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. She was born on December 29, 1921 the daughter of Lee and Winnie (Pollard) Shuler. On August 1, 1941 she married John Helpingstine and he preceded her in death on February 19, 1995. Lela is survived by two sons, Bill Helpingstine and wife Patty of Centralia and Garry Helpingstine and wife Terrie of Buffalo, Wyoming; one daughter, Kathy Steinmann and husband Mike of Centralia; grandchildren, Daniel Helpingstine and wife Christy of Centralia, Sarah Gordon and husband Clint of Salem, Amy Gilmore and husband Doug of West Valley, Utah, Jonathon Helpingstine and wife Crystal of Friendsville, Tennessee, Adam Helpingstine and wife Jamie of Lander, Wyoming, Thomas Helpingstine and wife Kelly of Odin, Lee Helpingstine and Chelsea Smith of Ferndale, Michigan, Andrew Helpingstine and wife Elisha of Logan, Utah, Rachel Barksdale and Matt Morton of Kell, Claire Elizabeth Helpingstine of Miami, Florida and Eric Helpingstine of Sheridan, Wyoming; great-grandchildren, Nate, Jacob, Claire Louise, Addison, Lindsay, Abi, Celeste, Caitlyn, Harper, Johnny, Randy, Annie and Richard; one sister, Thelma Phillips of Salem and one sister-in-law, Caroline Shuler of Champaign. In addition to her parents and husband, Lela was preceded in death by one son, Rob Helpingstine; great-grandson, Brandon Helpingstine; two brothers, Arvle Shuler and Buddy Shuler and two sisters, Lena Williams Davis and Irene Bryant. Lela loved making pies and biscuits for her family and enjoyed teaching others to do the same. Private Family Graveside Services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020 at Allmon Cemetery in Alma. A gathering of family and close friends will be on Friday from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem. Memorials can be made to the Centralia American Legion Post 0446 to help provide medical equipment for local veterans.
