Obituary of Felton Jose

Felton Jose Jr, age 89 of Salem passed away on Thursday May 21, 2020 at his home. Felton was born on November 4, 1930 in Highland, IL the son of Felton Jose Sr. and Mildred (Clayton) Jose Refeairn. He married Shirley (Manns) Jose on June 20, 1954 at the Presbyterian Church in Centralia and she survives in Salem. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Dana Lynn Polk and husband David Scott Polk of Salem; a grandson, Alexander Polk of Salem; half brothers, Dennis Jose of CA and James Jose of Highland; half sister, Peggy Hubbard of Highland; sister in law, Louise Jose of CA; and a nephew, Jeff Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joyce Brown; two brothers, Russell and Norman Jose; and a half sister, Patty Thompson Sloat. He served in the United States Marine Corp in California during the Korean Conflict. Felton worked at Kohrig’s Bakery in Salem for 22 years until 1963, he then worked at Yohe Laundry. In 1965 he became the owner and operator of Jose’s Coffee and Donut Shop in Salem, until his retirement in 1993. Later he was a Lab Courier for the Salem Township Hospital from 2000 to 2020. Felton and Darrell Kline coached Little League Baseball for 8 years. He and Don Jones started the charter for the Cub Scouts at Grace United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Salem Kiwanis Club. He taught Sunday School for 4 years at Grace United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member. Felton was elected to the Salem Grade School Board in 1971 and he served in all positions, including President and Vice President. He served as Chairman of the Kaskaskia Division since 1981, Board of Directors from 1981 to 1983 and again in 2005 to 2011. Resolutions Committee from 1985 to 2005 and again from 2001 to 2013. He was one of very few in Illinois who gave 40 years of Service. He and Shirley were helpful in the American Red Cross Bloodmobile from 1993 to 2010. He was a 50-gallon donor. He joined the Salem Township Hospital Auxiliary in 1993 and served in many ways, including President in 1995. He received a 4000 hour pin. Felton received the Studs Terkel award for Humanities. He received awards from Modern Woodsman, Red Cross, IASB, City of Salem, Kiwanis, and was named Humanitarian of the Year in 2011 by the Salem Chamber of Commerce. Family graveside services will be held on Tuesday May 26, 2020 at Paradise Cemetery in Salem with Lori Harvey officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salem Township Hospital Auxiliary or the Grace United Methodist Church in Salem and can be left at Crouse Funeral Home, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
