Obituary of Dennis B Burleyson

Dennis B. Burleyson, age 82 of Mt. Zion formerly of Salem passed away on February 8, 2020 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur. Dennis was born on September 25, 1937 to James B. and Julia L. (Sheets) Burleyson in Wetumka, Oklahoma . He married Nancy C. (Holbrook) Burleyson on September 8, 1962 in Carbondale, Illinois. Survivors include a son, Randy Burleyson and wife Jody of Aurora; three daughters, Julie Shafer and husband Doug of Mt. Zion, Sheri Black and husband Greg of Navarre, FL, and Rebecca Keller and husband Rick of Mt. Vernon; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters, Loretta Anderson of Tulsa, OK, Rosie Gragg of Manvel, TX, and Julia Williams of Gosnells, Australia; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gillen of Columbus, OH. Dennis was also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy, and sisters, Frances Kell, Amy Siracuse, and Peggy Knox. Dennis was a First Sergeant with the United States Army National Guard. He was an AST for the State of Illinois and administrator of the Salem armory with 38 years of service. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Salem. He was also a past member of the Salem Rotary Club and the Jaycee’s. Dennis also loved wood carving and created many beautiful pieces for family and friends. Graveside services for Dennis B. Burleyson will be held on Saturday September 26, 2020 at 11:00 am at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Centralia with Frank Brinkerhoff officiating. There will be military rites by the Salem American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society and may be left at Crouse Funeral Home who is assisting the family with arrangements.
