Melba Irene Johnston

–

Salem, Illinois

Melba Irene Johnston, age 87, of Salem, Illinois, passed away at home with family by her side on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Melba was born on September 29, 1939, in Iuka Township, Illinois, the daughter of Max Atteberry Metcalf and Kathryn (Sanders) Metcalf. On March 3, 1957, she married Oren Laverne Johnston at the Alma Christian Church, and he preceded her in death.

Throughout her life, Melba devoted herself to her family and her home. She also worked at the Brown Shoe Factory and later in home health care. She was a member of Victory Outreach Church in Iuka.

Melba enjoyed keeping busy and had many interests over the years. She loved quilting and sewing, working with her hands to create things for those around her. She also enjoyed fishing and camping, spending time outdoors, tending to her garden, and watching the birds. In quieter moments, she could often be found reading or working on puzzles. More than any hobby, however, Melba cherished her family. The time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was especially important to her and brought her great joy throughout her life.

She is survived by her children, Mary Annette Brown and husband Danny of Iuka, Jeanne Watson and husband Don of Salem, Robert Johnston of Kinmundy, Carla Phillips and Wayne Parker of Patoka, Lisa Perry and husband Herman of Salem, Roger Johnston and Mary Greenwood of Salem, Ellen Moon of Kinmundy, and Curt Johnston and wife Stacy of Kinmundy; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Byron Metcalf and wife Rosemary, Virginia Casner and husband Lee, and Joyce Phillips; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Melba was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oren Johnston; daughters, Sherry Winchester and Julie Ann Johnston; and grandchildren, Stella, Steven, Jason, and Adam.

Funeral services for Melba Irene Johnston will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Crouse Funeral Home, with Wilford Musgrave officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Old Bethel Cemetery in Iuka.
